Macbook Pro Forgot Login Password

broken image

No matter which method you use to reset administrator password on mac, it won't automatically update the password protecting the account's login keychain. Since the keychain is still protected with the old administrator password, there would be no way to get back into it unless you could update keychain password or create new keychain.

Aug 10, 2014 OS X Mountain Lion- Reset a login password, OS X Mavericks- Solve password problems, OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. For Snow Leopard and earlier with installer DVD. Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password, OS X- Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier). Open Keychain Access from Finder Applications Utilities, and choose Keychain Access.

Probably you are just prompted to do that at startup after Mac admin password reset, such as on Yosemite, or constantly asked to enter the keychain password after Mac login. Regardless of which happens, resetting keychain password would help you access Keychain again.

Click the arrow next to the message. The password field changes to a Recovery Key field. Enter your Recovery Key. Use uppercase characters, and include the hyphens. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a new password, then click Reset Password when done. Determine whether to create a new login keychain. Reset using Recover Mode. What do you do when you forgot your Mac admin password? Sometimes a user's login password needs to be reset—for example when the user has forgotten the login password and can't use a password hint to remember it. When a user's login password is reset, a new default keychain is created to store the user's passwords.

Method 1: Reset Keychain login password in Keychain Access

After you log into Mac with new administrator password, follow the steps below.

1. Open Keychain Access from Finder> Applications Utilities, and choose Keychain AccessPreferences from top menu.

2. In newer versions of Mac OS X, such as on Yosemite, you will see a button Reset My Default Keychain under the General pane.

3. Click it and enter the new login password in Password field to create new keychain.

Note: If you have no such button, choose EditKeychain List (Command + Option + L), select the login keychain, and click the minus button to delete it.

4. Quit Keychain Access and restart Mac. A new login keychain will recollecting and storing the passwords for Wi-Fi networks, email accounts, Web sites, and other logins as they occur.

Method 2: Reset Keychain password with command line in single user mode

If you cannot work with Keychain Access because of something like Messages Agent constantly asking for the forgotten login keychain password, you can use command line to reset Keychain password in single user mode.

1. Restart Mac and hold on Command + S to enter single user mode.

2. After you are prompted to enter a command-line after numerous lines of status messages, type this command to mount the root Mac OS X drive as writable.

Apple clear computer. mount -uw /

3. Delete that account's login keychain.

rm /Users/shortname/Library/Keychains/login.keychain

Can

Note: If you are not sure the shortname, please confirm it with command 'ls /Users' at first.

4. Reboot Mac by command 'reboot'.

After Mac starts, you should have created a new keychain on Mac.

Update keychain password if you still remember the old one:

1. Click Update Keychain Password and enter the old password at startup, or continue login and enter old password when you are asked.

2. Open Keychain Access and right click on login, and choose the option Change Password for Keychain 'Login' from pop-up menu.

3. Enter the old password in 'Current Password' field and new password in 'New Password' box. Verify it and click OK to successfully change keychain password.

Software :: Using Password For Standard User Account / Safari Is Asking For A Keychain Password

May 11, 2009

I'm working on a Mac-mini running OS X Tiger. I've got one admin account setup and 5 or so standard accounts. I'm configuring a connection to a shared folder on a network server on the standard accounts and I wanted to connect to that share using an account id that is DIFFERENT than the standard account id. I enter that id and the correct password and I check 'save password in keychain' (or whatever that check box says) and I get prompted to enter the 'keychain password' to unlock the keychain. The problem is, I never setup a keychain password for the standard user account. I'v tried the password for the administrator account (even though I can't specify the admin id anywhere) and I've tried the password for the standard user account, neither of which work.
However, I can still get successfully connected to the shared folder. I just don't want the user to have to enter the password each time they login.
Additionally, after going through this, Safari is now asking for a keychain password for the 'login' keychain when it first starts up and loads the default Apple.com home page.

PowerPC :: IBook G3 Not Recognizing Airport Password?

Oct 19, 2006

I have a iMac G5 with an Airport Extreme Card installed and an Airport Express Base Station. I have set a password on it and it is working fine on my G5.
I also have a G3 Clamshell iBook with OS 10.3 on it and an Airport card installed there. In my last home, it was able to connect to a default network without problem, but I have never been able to connect it to the same network as my G5. I enter the password and it says thet the password is not recognized. I have since moved into a new house and the only network that shows up is the one from my house (no default anymore and I can't get access to the internet.
I know the card is working since it picked up the default in my last place, but am wondering what I can do to get it to recognize the password. Should I reset the Airport Express. Do I need a more current version of OS X to run it than the OS 10.3 (I haven't updated the software as I just installed OS 10.3 from OS 10.2 last night and didn't have the connection to be able to do a software update - I could just plug it into the ethernet and do it if I need the update.
I don't want to leave it without a password. We are the only people right now in a new sub division but there will be people moving into the area soon that I don't want jacking my internet service.
